May Discussion Notes

We discussed several items at the May discussion meeting.  Below are the notes:

1.  There is a link to the LJH Master Calendar for 2009-2010 posted to the blog.  It is in the links to the left.  The calendar opens in a new browser window and is navigable.  What we know...There will not be any in-service days next year.  We are going to hold parent teacher conferences in the fall.  The date is still a little up in the air, but has been tentatively scheduled for the Tuesday of Fall Break week.  Most of the calendar changes for 2009-2010 will be discussed at the corporation discussion meeting tonight.

2.  The School Improvement plan for 2009-2010 was passed out.  There are no changes to the interventions or goal area for 2009-2010.  We will continue our work on reading with our interventions being vocabulary and reading strategies.

3.  Bonus period ideas for next year was discussed.  On the Year End Planning Survey, bonus period was the weakest program going on so change may be needed.  We discussed having a 6 week enrichment class for each teacher.  Kids would rotate amongst the team members.  We would have home base two days and enrichment for 3 days a week.  One for Word Wednesday and one more home base day for other activities.  Remediation could still happen sparingly during Bonus if teachers pulled kids in while their class was working on the enrichment.  The expectation for the enrichment would be that it be a Project-Based Learning experience for the kids tied "loosely" to the curriculum...Something that would help kids see the relevancy and applications of their academic work to their world.  More discussion will take place on this...

4.  The use of I-pods was discussed.  This promoted some good discussion.  The language in the handbook for next year will reflect that kids can have them in study hall, the cafeteria, and in class when used with an educational purpose.  We'll pass out the handbook language at the faculty meeting.

5.  Printer cartridges were discussed...This is one area where we have to start saving money.  The cost of printing to non-networked printers versus networked printers and copies is astonishing.  Departments will be given allotments for cartridges and once that is used up we'll have to wait until the next year.

6.  Channel One will be shown during 5th period next year.  Mr. Scott will recruit a few kids to be responsible for turning it on 2X during 5th period.  Once for A and B lunch classrooms and once for C lunch classroooms.

7.  Teaming for next year...Horizontal teaming is at the core of operating as a professional learning community.  The idea that we are smarter collectively than as individuals is an operating principle.  The horizontal team meetings will continue next year.  The possibility of holding them on Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m. each week was discussed.  If Bonus Period changes, the need to hold interdisciplinary meetings will decrease (interdisciplinary meetings did not receive strong marks for effectiveness on the end of the year survey).  We therefore, could hold the horizontal meetings in the a.m.  The meetings would be held in the media center with breakfast being served each Thursday.  This would allow for cross-grade, cross-curricular communication and would allow Mr. Gault and myself to work more closely with the horizontal teams...Still in the talking stages

Thanks to all who came.
