$61 Million to Indiana Schools

$61 Million Coming to to Help Schools

Indiana will receive more than $61 million in federal stimulus money to help the state's lowest-achieving schools improve their performance.

The U.S. Department of Education said Friday the money will be made available first to schools identified as persistently among the lowest achievers. The state education department says there are 64 of those. After that, more than 200 schools that have failed to meet federally required annual yearly progress for two years may apply.

School districts that apply for money this spring must be willing to take steps that can include replacing the principal and half or more of the teachers, converting the school to a charter school or closing the school and sending students to higher-achieving schools in the district.
