Goals Meeting Recap

Her are our strategies that we brainstormed to be used in all classes throughout the school year in order to reach our goals of having more students pass ISTEP in the areas of reading comprehension and problem solving.  Our goal targets the DNP students but these strategies are good for all students.  Lastly,  we learn together and lead together at Lincoln and it is all of our responsibility to implement these strategies with fidelity within our classrooms.  I have linked an article that talks about ideas for implementing literacy in all content ares.  Please read.

Goals Due November 1st uploaded to SFS.  These goals should be linked to our school wide goals and address how you will target students in your classroom in the areas of problem solving and comprehension.

Problem Solving Strategies.  

1. Ask students to use evidence from text to support an answer to a higher level question with no answer.

2. Explain process used to solve a problem.  (Great way to have student write and discuss)

3.  Read, underline, identify important details while solving problems.

Comprehension of Nonfiction/info text and literary text.  

1. Draw parallels between text and students own life.

2. Practice think, pair, share in conjunction with reading.

3. Modeling strategies, (Cornell note taking, summarizing, more to come from LA department)

4. Read, write, discuss of informational text.

As I wrote this I cannot help but refer everyone back to FOCUS by Schmoker and the authentic literacy template and the content chapters that target reading, writing, and discussing in each content area to help with the area of comprehension.  As Schmoker argues we must make reading, writing, and discussing a priority first and foremost.
