The End is Near

Yes, the end of summer vacation is upon us all.  I hope that everyone feels recharged and ready to go for the 2019-2020 school year.  If not you still have about 7 days to recharge and prepare.

The 2019-2020 school year will be yet another year of some changes and an opportunity for us for us to grow by leading and learning together.  As we look towards August 7th, our students will arrive with excitement and anxiety both.  We will be prepared to get them off to a great start and help them grow as learners and people because that is what we do.  Our success always starts and ends with the relationships that we build with all students.  Getting to know our students as learners and kids will be the most important step we take towards this success throughout the year.  Investing in this mindset will speak volumes to our students, parents, and community.  We will be READY!

Information on Upcoming happenings:

July 31st-  New staff induction - 8:00 Blue room of WSOI

August 1st- New Staff induction @ Lincoln 8:00-3:00, meet in office with Sandy.

August 1st- Lincoln Leadership Team Meeting 8:00- 11:30,  Red Room

August 1st- Back to School Cookout  6:00-7:30,  Teachers should have class information available for parents and students, this can be a brief introduction to your students and parents or whatever you would like it to be.  The evening is spent meeting our students and helping them feel welcome and comfortable at Lincoln.  Students will be visiting classrooms, working lockers, walking schedules.  On the front lawn there will be hotdogs and water available along with other activities.  Last year, it was a great start to the school year and we anticipate the same this year.  Teachers are expected to attend.  Stop by upon arrival to get your name tags.  Enjoy meeting your students and parents.

House System-  1st Day House Ceremony-  Students will report to the red gym and sit by grade on the bleachers.  At 8:05 I will address the student body and introduce the new Houses at Lincoln.  Students will then come up and pick their House envelop.  This is a random blind draw that is not yet in powerschool.  After all students have picked their envelop and returned to their seats we will reveal the houses and students will come down to meet their house mates and leave to their rooms.  These students will make up their advisory classes for the year.  Houses will be made up of both 7th and 8th grade students.

Houses should work collaboratively to build a sense of belonging and pride among their students.  Houses will compete throughout the year in a variety of ways.  We are excited to build on this new system and are asking for ideas and activities that we can do this first year.  Houses/advisory will meet everyday in conjunction with lunch just as in the past with the focus continuing to be on building relationships, empathy among students, a sense of belonging, and pride.  Community circles will continue during this time as well as our for High School credit online classes.  Remember that these courses are to be facilitated courses that students do independently via Canvas not directly taught courses.

House activities-  Mixed/same grade community circles, mixed or same sex community circles, student check ins with teachers, tracking student/house learning, tracking student/house attendance, tracking student/house behavior, team building activities in the gym or outside, technology help sessions, watching Storm TV, Work sessions for PCC or Digital Apps and Responsibility, etc.

Lastly,  I would like to stress that we are very open to feedback and suggestions for our new House system.  We will lead together and learn together this first year.  Here are the houses.

Houses

Boot Camp- This new method of teaching students our school-wide expectations will take place over the first two days.  Each teacher is responsible teaching one of the 32 expectations determined by teachers last school year.  Students will rotate into classrooms every 8 minutes with 2 minutes of travel time.  Teacher can choose how they teach the expectations.  On Thursday afternoon we will hold our Bootcamp Completion Celebration. More information will come from Mr. Singleton regarding this new process.  Stay tuned.

iPads- The move from Macbooks to iPads will be an interesting one for all of us.  A growth mindset and our team approach to lead together and learning together will help make the move a successful one.  On Friday August 9th all teachers will be expected to teach their classroom expectations with the iPads and all advisory teachers will devote advisory time on this day to introduce/teach/read the technology handbook to their advisory students.  Students will then be asked to sign an acknowledgement that they understand the expectations and have reviewed the handbook.  Teachers are to collect the acknowledgements and turn them into the media center when students pick up their iPads on Monday August 12th.  Monday will be a 2 hour delay schedule.  Teachers should also use advisory on Monday to review the iPad expectations and help students with using the iPad.
