Engaging students with DOK levels.

Purposeful planning of a variety of tasks that reach all the level of DOK is vital to the success of our students and our school.  Students must be exposed to the different levels of tasks and required to think at deeper levels daily.  We know that our new tests as well as the old ISTEP has required students to think a deeper levels.  Years ago students saw only DOK levels of 1 and 2 on standardized test but those days are long gone.  Our ability to mix it up and reach those higher levels of DOK is imperative.  What level are your learning tasks?  How are you ensuring that students think more often more of the time?  What scaffolds are you putting in place to help students be successful at DOK 2,3. and 4?  Are you removing the scaffolds as students' skills grow?  Here is an example of a questions that students will need to be able to answer on iLEARN.

As we continually plan our lessons for students we must make sure that we are requiring students to think at the various DOK levels.  Making students thinking visible is also a key so that we can see what all students are thinking.  One way to make learning visible is to have students write and write in abundance.  When students write it requires them to think.  Not copying notes or vocabulary rather comparing, hypothesizing, citing evidence, explaining, arguing, or other DOK level 2, 3, or 4 tasks.  The better that we all do this the better all of our students think more often more of the time.  Check out this resource that I have put together for iLearn.

Supervision-  As we continue to become the best we can be, supervision is a key to us getting where we all want to be.  We must continue to be proactive in our hallway supervision and strive to be consistent in our approach.  Being outside our doors and greeting students as they enter the classrooms is very important.  This also helps make sure our presence is felt throughout the hallways.  I would also like for teachers to occasionally check restrooms during our passing periods.  A team approach to proactive supervision will make sure that we are helping all students remain safe each and everyday here at Lincoln.
